Habitat-NYC Families Receive Keys to
New, Affordable, Eco-Friendly Homes in Brooklyn
On September 26, 41 low-income New York City families received the keys to their new
Habitat for Humanity - New York City homes in a joyful celebration in
Ocean Hill-Brownsville, Brooklyn.
The ribbon-cutting marked an historic first for Habitat-NYC: This is
the largest and greenest multifamily complex ever built by a Habitat
affiliate in the nation. These 41 affordable green condominiums are
expected to receive LEED Gold certification, one of the highest green
building ratings.
Global Green USA has been assisting Habitat-NYC on this project since
2005, beginning with early visioning work and green technical
assistance that continued through design and construction. Global
Green has partnered with Habitat for Humanity affiliates throughout the
country for more than 15 years to help create energy-efficient,
environmentally-friendly homes that are affordable to build and operate.

Two More Homes Completed at the Holy Cross Project in New Orleans
Two more single-family homes have been completed at the Holy Cross Project in the Lower Ninth Ward and are now on the market!
The homes are built to LEED Platinum certification and have all the sustainable and energy-efficiency features of the first house, currently serving as the Visitor Center. The homes will save an estimated 70% a year in utility costs.
You can view the real-time solar energy consumption and production of the first house in the Holy Cross project through our Building Dashboard(R),a monitoring tool that is both in the house, and online.

CoRR and Starbucks Launch Paper Cup Recycling Pilot

In September, seven Starbucks stores in Manhattan launched a cup-recycling program in cooperation with Global Green USA’s Coalition for Resource Recovery (CoRR). The
pilot will test the collection and recycling of coffee cups when
combined with old corrugated cardboard (OCC), which is the
most extensively recycled material in the U.S. The objective of the
program is to develop a cost-effective mechanism to close the loop on
paper packaging, reducing greenhouse gases and assisting municipalities
in reaching their solid waste diversion goals.
Every year, 58 billion paper cups are used in the
U.S. at restaurants, events, and homes. If all paper cups in the U.S.
were recycled, 645,000 tons of waste would be diverted from landfills
each year, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2.5 million mtCO2e,
equivalent to removing 450,000 passenger cars from the road. Learn More __________________________________________
Home Energy Efficiency Bill to Save Money, Reduce Carbon Emissions
This month, Governor Schwarzenegger signed into law Assembly Bill (AB) 758, legislation that will make existing buildings more energy efficient and less expensive to operate. The bill, sponsored by Global Green USA and authored by Assembly Member Nancy Skinner (D- Berkeley), will require the California Energy Commission (CEC) to develop an energy efficiency program for all existing residential and commercial buildings.
Energy use in buildings is the largest single global warming pollution source in the United States accounting for 48% of all greenhouse gas emissions nationally. AB 758 would require the California Energy Commission to establish a regulatory proceeding, by March 1, 2010, to develop and implement a comprehensive program to achieve energy savings in the existing residential and commercial building stock that falls significantly below current Title 24 building standards. The bill would also require the California Public Utilities Commission (PUC), by January 1, 2011, to authorize each electrical corporation to provide a targeted number of low- or no-cost energy efficiency audits each calendar year. eBay Teams Up With GGUSA Board Member Zem Joaquin to Benefit Global Green

This fall, eBay’s Green Team champions a growing consumer mindset with their six-week “re+purpose” campaign. Re+purpose is designed to inspire people to make more sustainable shopping choices and increase awareness that the greenest products are often ones that already exist, whether vintage, used, or repurposed.
From November 4 - 19, the third and final phase of the fall campaign drives home the fact that reuse is cool — especially the “sexy, sustainable stuff” curated by Global Green Board member and creative DIY maven Zem Joaquin, ecofabulous.com’s founder and editor-in-chief. The eBay Green Team will hold a Creative Reuse Competition, a national call for the best examples of DIY projects – made from reused items – from around the country. For the duration of the collaboration, ebay.com/greenteam will feature custom content from Zem to serve as inspiration and will reward new and returning eBay Green Team members with $1 donated on their behalf to Global Green USA.

Two First Steps on Nuclear Weapons
THE NEW YORK TIMES. SEPT 25, 2009. By Mikhail Gorbachev
At their meeting in Moscow in early July, Presidents Obama and
Medvedev reaffirmed the relationship between strategic offensive
weapons and missile defense. The two nations continue arms reduction
talks and, judging by cautious diplomatic statements, they seem to be
on course to complete them by Dec. 5, when the first Strategic Arms
Reduction Treaty — which I signed with President George H. W. Bush in
1991 — is due to expire.
This week’s United Nations meeting marks
the next stage of progress. It is vital that other nations come away
from the meeting believing that America and Russia are moving toward
verifiable nuclear arms reductions, and that by the time the Nuclear
Nonproliferation Treaty review conference is held at the United Nations
next May, they will have made progress toward the eventual elimination
of nuclear weapons.
