The Millennium Awards were established in 1996 to recognize and herald those whose lives and livelihood embody Global Green USA’s mission of "fostering a global value shift toward a sustainable and secure world." The Awards were designed to honor individuals, companies and organizations who recognize the connection between humankind and nature, to celebrate their success and inspire others to make such exceptional behavior the norm. They are presented annually in Los Angeles.

Individual Environmental Leadership Award

 Individual activist whose efforts, either as an individual or through an organization, empower their community and society toward ecological restoration and a sustainable future. Their courage and innovation inspire others and move them to action. Past recipients: David Brower, Earth Island Institute (1997), Winona LaDuke (1998), David Suzuki (1999), John Adams, NRDC (2000), Jonathan Lash, World Resources Institute (2002)*, Paul Hawken (2003), Sally Lilienthal, Ploughshares Fund (2005), William McDonough, William McDonough and Partners (2006), David Orr (2007), Van Jones (2008).

Entertainment Industry Environmental Leadership Award

Individual who exhibits extraordinary leadership, reflecting a deep personal commitment to the environment and who encourages responsible behavior amongst the public, and within the industry. The honoree supports efforts that respond to GCI’s former President Mikhail Gorbachev's call for "entertainment and culture to help educate and encourage a global value shift towards the environment." Corporate Environmental Leadership Award

A successful corporate leader who is moving their company from “business as usual” toward a “restorative enterprise.” This individual and company’s commitment to resource efficiency, social responsibility and sustainability pervades throughout their company and personal life. This person encourages and inspires chieftains in industry and others to join in pioneering the processes of sustainable development. Past recipients: Ray Anderson, Interface, Inc. International Environmental Leadership Award

Individual or organization that has demonstrated international leadership to protect the environment and create a value shift toward a sustainable secure future. Through their use of collaboration and partnership, they shine a light on environmental challenges and conflicts while providing innovative solutions and initiatives. California/Local Environmental Leadership Award

  Individual or organization that has demonstrated environmental leadership in California public policy through innovative legislation, regulations, or initiatives that encourages sustainability. David Freeman (2000), Treasurer Phil Angelides (2002)*, Councilman Eric Garcetti (2003), Los Angeles Community College District (2004), CalPERS (2005), Fran Pavley, 41st District, California Assembly (2006), Mayor Gavin Newsome (2007), Los Angeles Unified School District (2008), Wallis Annenberg / The Annenberg Foundation (2009).

Community Environmental Leadership Award

Inaugurated in 2006, the Millennium Award for Community Environmental Leadership honors individuals or organizations that have cultivated and led communities to create extraordinary collective environmental achievements.
